The Nantmor Mountain Centre was created in 1963 when the enthusiasm of students and staff of Shenstone College of Education, Bromsgrove, led to the lease of Gelli Iago from a local farmer. In those early days, before electricity came to the valley, the centre was lit by Calor gas and paraffin lamps! Since then Nantmor has grown and prospered, and countless improvements have been made with the help of the devoted work of enthusiastic members.
Over the years Gelli Iago has provided a base for so many courses for schoolchildren, students and adults alike, ranging from Outdoor Activities and Mountain Leadership to Art and Photography.
In recent years the Gelli Iago and Hafod y Llan Estates (including Snowdon) were purchased by the National Trust from the Williams family, the original landlords, after a much publicised national appeal.
The maintenance and day-to-day running of the Centre is the responsibility of the Warden and other members of the committee, elected each year at the AGM. The Nantmor Mountain Centre Association has charitable status and is a non profit making organisation. photo by Jari Lahti |
